The last week of hatching our chicks has been a real reward for patience.
After many days of looking after them and keeping an eye on the correct parameters: temperature and humidity, we have a real ‘baby boom’. Out of 20 silky hen eggs, we already have 9 chicks and more are working intensively with their beaks to get out into the world.
We have documented the hatching of the chicks; if you don't know what this process looks like, you can watch our film.
We made our own bedding for the container in which the chicks will be further developed before they go into the hen house.
The poultry house is waiting, and not just any poultry house! A solid, new-smelling poultry house from Podlasie, with all its amenities and protected against predators. No fox or marten can undermine us.
Are hens on a school farm a good idea? Yes!
We assure you that the chicks are very popular and it is hard to tear the pupils away from them. Even our farm dog shanti does his best to have a look, sometimes only his height doesn't allow him :)
Over the last two days we have been able to observe:
- how a chick hatches from an egg, how long it takes, how the process of breaking the shell works
- what the first minutes and hours of the chicks look like after hatching
- how individual chicks behave and how groups of chicks behave, how they interact with each other
- how quickly they gain strength, whether they stand up straight away
- how long it takes the chicks to dry after hatching and what this depends on
- what happens to the shell after hatching
- when the chicks make their first sounds (still in the egg would you believe?)
- when they eat and drink and make their first poo
- what happens when a clumsy chick falls over on its back
You have to admit, it's a lot of knowledge and a terribly engaging activity. Check out the gallery!
