Can you make a volcano yourself? The Maple class made an interesting chemical experiment.
First, everyone made a miniature volcano out of salt paste. Some were so decorated that they could have gone straight to the miniature film studio and starred in more than one cartoon - pretending to be a real volcanic cone.
At this stage they were dormant volcanoes, or extinct volcanoes if you prefer. For an eruption to occur, a bit of science was needed. A portion of soda was first put into the chimneys of the volcanoes, and then everyone used a pipette to add a bit of vinegar.
Vinegar and soda are a very turbulent relationship and it's a real chemical reaction! Each of the volcanoes woke up and, depending on its shape, spat out a stream of lava or filled up its caldera.
These are the kind of lessons we like!
