The lesson of silence, is a unique lesson in Montessori education.
Being able to control your own expression, is quite a challenge. The ability to quiet down in a cheerful and spontaneous pre-school or school environment seems difficult to achieved. Apart from obtaining momentary silence and stillness in the classroom, it is more important to be able to reflect, notice one's surroundings and treating it with appropriate respect. It is the development of grace and courtesy.
By practising silence, we acquire many essential skills that are useful in the later stages of life. We learn about the sensitivity of our surroundings to noise, how our body works without sound overload and how to concentrate under such conditions. We learn about the limits of what is acceptable and what is disturbing to our surroundings in order to achieve self-regulation.
We implemented the lesson on silence with the help of a bell, which the children carefully passed on to each other.
In addition, we had a special guest - Coco the tortoise, who lives in symbiosis with the pupils of the Maple class. His visit was not only an opportunity to learn fascinating facts about turtles, but also to observe them up close! We learned about its natural environment, their ability to live in both water and on land, as well as also about how their shells protect them from hazards.
