We did it! The long-awaited moment has arrived at our Montessori Farm in Brzezina. Our adorable, fluffy Silkie chickens have laid their first eggs. But that is not the only success – the chickens have moved into unique nesting boxes that the students prepared themselves using traditional carpentry techniques.

First Treasures in the Coop

The joy among the students was immense when they discovered the first eggs in the coop during their morning rounds. They are small, creamy, and perfectly suit the delicate nature of our Silkie hens. For the children, this is an amazing live biology lesson – they can observe the cycle of nature and see the direct result of their care for the animals. The pride on their faces (as seen in the photos!) speaks for itself.

Fire and Oil – Carpentry Workshops in Practice

However, before the eggs appeared, the students had to ensure proper conditions for the laying hens. As part of practical classes at the farm, the children participated in the process of creating professional wooden nesting boxes. The students didn't take the easy way out! They applied a natural and very durable method of wood preservation:

  1. Flame Charring: Under the watchful eye of supervisors, students used gas torches to scorch the wooden boxes. This process (referencing the Japanese technique Shou Sugi Ban) not only gives the wood a beautiful, dark color and highlights the grain, but above all, it protects it from moisture, fungi, and pests without the use of chemicals.
  2. Linseed Oil Impregnation: After charring, students in their green Montessori Farm School sweatshirts grabbed their brushes. The still-hot wood was protected with natural linseed oil varnish. Teamwork was in full swing!

A New Home for the Hens

The finished nesting boxes, smelling of wood and natural oil, were placed in the coop. They were lined with fresh straw, creating a cozy and safe place for our feathered charges. As you can see, the Silkie hens really took a liking to their new apartments, and the result of this acceptance is precisely the first eggs found by the children. This is further proof that learning at the Farm in Brzezina is not just theory, but above all action, responsibility, and close contact with nature.
