Spring at our Academy is a time of intensive growth, hands-on work, and careful observation of the changes occurring in nature. At both the Brzezina farm and the Mokronos garden, our students are becoming part of the ecosystem's great awakening.
Life is teeming at the Brzezina farm
At our farm in Brzezina, spring manifests itself on many levels. A nimble squirrel can be spotted among the trees, and in the dense grass, a student's keen eye will find small eggshells – silent proof that new life has already hatched in the nests. The pond is covered in a characteristic yellow coating of pollen, and the apple trees are laden with white blossom. We are particularly delighted to see the cherry tree, which bravely withstood the frosts and already has large, promising fruitlets.
In the microworld, the struggle for survival also continues – we managed to observe a fencepost jumper spider, which had just made a meal of a fat fly. The proximity of the Oder Valley makes our palace at the farm an important stopover for many bird species. Alongside autumn, spring is the best time to admire this extraordinary spectacle of arrivals and departures, turning our farm into a true centre for ornithological observation.
Let us not forget the bees, which are industriously collecting pollen from dandelions and other flowers – from which spring honey will be made. Our bees have lived with us since last year, when they swarmed from the hive and decided to set up a wild beehive in the hollow of our old plane tree. They managed to survive the winter and are now working hard throughout the area. It would be lovely to peek at the honeycombs, but we would probably need a climbing tree-beekeeper! :)
Little gardeners in Mokronos and a trip to Wrocław
In Mokronos, our students have set to work in the garden. This year's spring is exceptionally dry and rainless, so daily care and watering the tulips and other plants have become a permanent fixture in our daily schedule.
As part of the preparations for the vegetable season, students have pricked out the tomato seedlings. The young plants have already been put into the soil and will continue their growth in the greenhouse, so that we can enjoy the taste of home-grown produce in the summer.
Our school observations were complemented by a trip to the Botanical Garden in Wrocław. Amidst the rich collection of plants, we searched for further signs of spring, comparing them with those we know from our own sites. It was an inspiring time spent in the fresh air, teaching us respect for the world around us.
We invite you to view the photo gallery of our spring activities!
